Regression - Background

Typically, a simple linear regression is performed when one wishes to determine the functional linear relationship between an independent variable and a dependent variable. This functional relationship can be described by an equation that includes the slope of the best fit line (also called the regression coefficient), and the y intercept of the best fit line. The best fit line minimizes the total distance between the points and the line.
