Parapatric Speciation - Simulation
In this simulation the location, size, and selection pressures of two different environments can be adjusted. Each of these parameters can be adjusted while the simulation is running.
To simulate parapatric speciation, make sure that the environments overlap somewhat and that the optimal genotypes in the two environments are also different. After pressing run, you will notice that two different types of individuals will form due to the different selection pressures. You may also notice the existence of an intermediate type within the hybrid zone.
The amount of gene flow between the two environments can be adjusted by increasing or decreasing the mobility scrollbar.
In this simulation, the optimal genotype in the hybrid zone (the intersection between the two environments) is just the average optimal genotype of the two environments.
